THE CAMBRIDGE BOOK LAUNCH
On April 25, 2024, the prestigious Fitzwilliam College at the University of Cambridge hosted the highly anticipated launch of “12 Remarkable African Life Scientists,” a groundbreaking book by Dr Tabitha Mwangi. The event brought together an esteemed audience of academics and students eager to explore the inspiring narratives that have touched them the most and share their goals for the future.
A FRISIDE CHAT WITH PROF. BHASKAR VIRA
During the evening, there was an engaging fireside chat with Dr. Tabitha Mwangi and Professor Bhaskar Vira, FAcSS, who is the University’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education and Environmental Sustainability. Professor Vira, a prominent figure at Cambridge, is also a Professor of Political Economy at the Department of Geography, a Fellow of Fitzwilliam College, and an Honorary Fellow of St John’s College. His extensive expertise in education and environmental sustainability provided a rich backdrop for the discussion

The event was moderated by Nathan Odiase Osareme, a PhD candidate in Strategy and International Business and project lead of the MasterCard Pre-Application Mentorship Program.
Nathan guided the conversation, ensuring that key themes were explored in depth while allowing the audience to gain valuable insights into the significance of the book.
Several students in attendance also contributed to the discussion, answering questions from the audience and sharing their personal experiences. Their participation underscored the book's relevance to young scholars and its potential to shape the future of scientific research in Africa.
STUDENT ENGAGEMENT
SPECIAL READINGS
Three MasterCard Foundation Scholars delivered special readings that left a deep impression during the event.
The scholars who were reading included Angela Doom Sughnen (MPhil in Biological Sciences, Crop Science pathway), Sheila Makena Nugi (MPhil in Population Health Sciences), and Shufaa Hame (MPhil in Population Health Sciences).
They chose and read excerpts from the book that resonated with them, emphasizing themes of resilience, innovation, and determination. They shared how these themes inspired them to pursue their own paths in the field of science. The scholars' insights underscored the book's potential to spark enthusiasm and ambition in young scientists throughout Africa.
